About YMCA
The YMCA is a global, Christ-centered movement empowering youth and communities through service, inclusion, and justice. Rooted in Christian values, we promote equity, compassion, and peace.
Our core values—faith in God, inclusivity, service, and stewardship—guide our mission to build loving, humane communities. YMCA India serves especially the underprivileged and distressed.
Founded in 1844 in London by George Williams, the YMCA was created to offer moral and spiritual support amid industrial chaos. Today, it's a global symbol of hope and resilience.
YMCA came to India in the late 1800s, forming its National Council in 1891. Now headquartered in New Delhi, it includes 700+ associations and 300,000+ members—Asia-Pacific's largest YMCA network.
The Southern India Region, based in Chennai, is the largest in the country, supporting 200+ YMCAs focused on education, child welfare, training, women’s empowerment, and health.
Across history, YMCA has empowered individuals through hostels, colleges, training centers, and rural outreach. Leaders like K.T. Paul and S.K. Datta laid a strong foundation we continue to build upon.
